RUSSELL BROOM
So many people I know have worked with Russell and so far, no one’s had anything but good things to say. The fantastic thing about actually getting down to Calgary is that over the last 3 visits we’ve found some incredibly common ground. Rarely have I found someone who catches on so quickly to my way of thinking and who is able to follow my dark, character filled humor. We’ve laughed a lot in our sessions, which has led to the most comfort I’ve ever felt in front of a mic.
After spending a week at the Banff Center for the Arts working with Marc Pérusse (a producer from Montréal) and Luc DeLarochellière (a fantastic song writer) I was pretty burnt out. Still, I made my way to Russell’s home studio, ate some fresh cherry tomatoes which we both agreed are dangerous in that they are highly addictive, and we recorded a demo of a new track that I wrote. The song is different from anything I’ve done to date in that it feels like it’s integrating things I’ve learnt over the last year with this project. It actually has a hook (thanks a lot for corrupting me Brad and Freddy)! Not only that, but working with Josh made me explore and develop a new appreciation for simplicity. Sprinkle that with a hands on lets try anything Russell Broom approach, and we’ve got something interesting. I mean seriously- banjo! Here's a preview : |

So even though his schedule is swamped, Russell actually agreed to tackle some lyrics and put them to music. As soon as a rough comes in you'll get a first hand listen. In the mean time, here are the lyrics. A little unusual for me, especially in comparison to my previous writing, especially because of the rhymes, but it seems like something Russell could work with.
If you were mine We’d drink corked wine Wander out into the countryside And marvel as our bodies collide We’d sing discordant tunes At the top of our lungs for the moon Dance our way toward dawn And at first light we’d dance on In the banks of freshly fallen snow We’d paint pictures of where we could go We’d tell tales of what used to be (Before I knew you, before you knew me) Bury our ghosts and set ourselves free If you were mine you’d be as clear As a solemn promise whispered in your ear As the deepest secret revealed sincere If you were mine |
