A few years back, Mitch was hugging the walls at a house party. Since then, he’s become a much more outgoing guy. Still relatively quiet on first encounter, he’s become quite the showman and man does he come up with some killer beats…then he goes and throws in some sax!
A skilled multi-instrumentalist, I wasn’t too sure how we should approach this project. Especially since Mitch was the first person I worked with. We went over options for collaborations. I had some rough drafts of poetry prepared ahead of time, but when it come down to it, we chose “Mon homme”. Mitch decided to try producing it but in the end it didn’t really inspire either of us. It was a good night though of playing around with recording gear, swapping music stories and life philosophies, and a nice over-all bonding experience. Mitch is quiet. He seems to observe and absorb rather than spend time divulging. It makes him a little hard to read…or maybe it’s because I’m so extroverted and I’m still learning to speak introverted… To teach himself how to play, how to compose, how to write, Mitch listens to music and then imitates it. From jazz to Motown, from saxophone to keys he dabbles in a little of everything. He even used a light up keyboard at one point so that he could follow the keys and learn to play. When we got together the second time, we decided to try jamming which led to a neat mixture of lyric based songs and electro-acoustics. A few weeks later, we tried it out in front of a crowd sharing a bill with Colleen Brown at the Artery. |
